The school year here in New Zealand starts in February and ends in December, just a few days before Christmas. It makes things very straightforward: the school year is the calendar year. Although it means we have our long summer break while the weather is often still pretty patchy and they go back into class just as it gets reliably hot and sunny in February. But I am aware that right now, on the other side of the world, it's a time of sharpened pencils and new backpacks.
